As consumers, we all take comfort knowing that companies are conforming to the rules and regulations set out by the governing bodies that be. As such, it can bring solace to see the “CE” marking on a new product.
The CE marking is and was a manufacturers declaration that they are conforming to the requirements laid out by EU Legislation. However, with the Brexit transition still in full swing, the CE marking is slowly being phased out for UK manufacturers and importers.
With everything from Toys and Boilers to Machinery and PPE being subject to regulations, the UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) Marking is the new mark that will be used by UK Manufacturers and Importers.
As with all other transitions coming in the wake of Brexit, whilst the official marking came into effect from 1st January 2021, UK companies will have until the 1st January 2023 to transition to the new marking. All previously CE marked products will still be covered on the UK market until that date, but after that the CE marking ceases to be a legal marking on the UK consumer market.
For those wishing to sell into the EU market, they will still require the CE marking.
